गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर (देव गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर), दशाश्वमेध घाट, वाराणसी की कथा दशाश्वमेध घाट के निकट स्थित गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर काशी के प्राचीन और दुर्लभ मंदिरों में से एक माना जाता है। यहाँ देव गुरु बृहस्पति की पूजा की जाती है। मान्यता है कि काशी में भगवान शिव के दर्शन के साथ यदि देवगुरु बृहस्पति का भी दर्शन किया जाए, तो ज्ञान, विद्या, विवाह, संतान और गुरु कृपा की प्राप्ति होती है। मंदिर से जुड़ी लोकमान्यता के अनुसार, देवताओं के गुरु बृहस्पति ने काशी में आकर भगवान शिव की कठोर तपस्या की थी। उनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने उन्हें इस स्थान पर सदैव विराजमान रहने का आशीर्वाद दिया। तभी से यह स्थान गुरु कृपा का केंद्र माना जाता है और श्रद्धालु विशेष रूप से गुरुवार के दिन यहाँ पूजा-अर्चना करते हैं। यह मंदिर प्रसिद्ध दशाश्वमेध घाट के पास स्थित है। दशाश्वमेध घाट स्वयं उस पौराणिक कथा से जुड़ा है जिसमें भगवान ब्रह्मा ने भगवान शिव के स्वागत हेतु दस अश्वमेध यज्ञ किए थे। इसी कारण घाट का नाम "दशाश्वमेध" पड़ा। मान्यता गुरुवार को पीले वस्त्र, चने की दाल, हल्दी और पीले पुष्प अर्पित करना शुभ माना जाता है। विद्यार्थी, शिक्षक, विवाह में बाधा या गुरु दोष से पीड़ित लोग विशेष रूप से यहाँ दर्शन करने आते हैं। काशी विश्वनाथ के दर्शन के साथ इस मंदिर के दर्शन को भी अत्यंत शुभ माना जाता है। गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर, दशाश्वमेध घाट की पौराणिक कथा यह ध्यान रखना आवश्यक है कि स्कंद पुराण में काशी के अनेक तीर्थों और शिवलिंगों का माहात्म्य विस्तार से मिलता है, लेकिन आज प्रचलित "गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर" की पूरी कथा एक ही अध्याय में लगातार नहीं दी गई है। वर्तमान परंपरा काशी खंड, स्थानीय मान्यताओं और पुरोहित-परंपरा के आधार पर प्रचलित है। 1. महर्षि अंगिरा और बृहस्पति महर्षि अंगिरा के पुत्र बृहस्पति जन्म से ही अत्यंत तेजस्वी, वेदों के ज्ञाता और धर्मनिष्ठ थे। उन्होंने कठोर तप, यज्ञ और वेदाध्ययन के बल पर देवताओं में सर्वोच्च सम्मान प्राप्त किया। बाद में वे देवगुरु और वाचस्पति कहलाए। 2. काशी में तपस्या काशी खंड की परंपरा के अनुसार बृहस्पति ने मोक्षदायिनी काशी में आकर भगवान शिव का कठोर तप किया। उन्होंने अनेक वर्षों तक जप, ध्यान और रुद्राभिषेक कर शिव को प्रसन्न किया। अंततः भगवान शिव प्रकट हुए और वरदान माँगने को कहा। 3. शिव का वरदान बृहस्पति ने कहा— > "हे विश्वनाथ! मुझे ऐसा वर दीजिए कि मैं सदा धर्म का मार्ग दिखा सकूँ और आपकी नगरी में आने वाले भक्तों को ज्ञान एवं सद्बुद्धि प्रदान कर सकूँ।" भगवान शिव प्रसन्न होकर बोले कि: तुम देवताओं के गुरु कहलाओगे। नवग्रहों में तुम्हें सर्वोच्च सम्मान मिलेगा। काशी में तुम्हारे द्वारा स्थापित शिवलिंग बृहस्पतीश्वर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगा। जो भक्त श्रद्धा से यहाँ पूजा करेगा, उसे ज्ञान, विवाह-सुख, संतान, धन और गुरु-कृपा प्राप्त होगी। बृहस्पतीश्वर शिवलिंग मान्यता है कि बृहस्पति ने स्वयं यहाँ शिवलिंग की स्थापना की। इसी कारण इसका नाम बृहस्पतीश्वर पड़ा। बाद में उसी क्षेत्र में देवगुरु बृहस्पति की उपासना भी प्रचलित हुई और वर्तमान गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर की परंपरा विकसित हुई। 5. गुरुवार का महत्व गुरुवार बृहस्पति देव का दिन माना जाता है। इसलिए इस दिन भक्त: पीले वस्त्र धारण करते हैं। हल्दी, चने की दाल और पीले पुष्प अर्पित करते हैं। भगवान शिव तथा देवगुरु बृहस्पति की पूजा करते हैं। मान्यता है कि इससे गुरु ग्रह की शुभता बढ़ती है और जीवन में ज्ञान, सम्मान तथा पारिवारिक सुख प्राप्त होता है। 6. काशी खंड का संदेश काशी खंड का मूल संदेश है कि काशी स्वयं भगवान शिव की नगरी है। यहाँ स्थित प्रत्येक तीर्थ और देवालय साधक को धर्म, ज्ञान और अंततः मोक्ष की ओर ले जाता है। बृहस्पति की कथा भी यही सिखाती है कि तप, विनम्रता और गुरु-भक्ति से ही वास्तविक ज्ञान प्राप्त होता है। काशी खंड में बृहस्पतीश्वर तीर्थ का उल्लेख मिलता है, लेकिन एक महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि उपलब्ध प्राचीन पांडुलिपियों और प्रकाशित संस्करणों में श्लोकों के पाठ (पाठभेद) अलग-अलग हैं। इसलिए मैं बिना प्रमाण के संस्कृत श्लोक उद्धृत नहीं कर सकता। काशी खंड में बृहस्पतीश्वर तीर्थ का सार इस प्रकार है: 1. देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने काशी में तप किया। उन्होंने भगवान शिव की दीर्घकाल तक आराधना की और उन्हें प्रसन्न किया। 2. शिव ने वरदान दिया। भगवान शिव ने बृहस्पति को देवताओं का गुरु होने का गौरव दिया और उनके द्वारा स्थापित शिवलिंग को बृहस्पतीश्वर नाम से प्रसिद्ध होने का आशीर्वाद दिया। 3. दर्शन का फल। काशी खंड में वर्णित है कि विशेष रूप से गुरुवार और पुष्य नक्षत्र के योग में बृहस्पतीश्वर की पूजा करने से कार्यों में सफलता, बुद्धि, यश और शुभ फल प्राप्त होते हैं। 4. पूजा का महत्व। श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजा, जप और अभिषेक करने से गुरु ग्रह की कृपा तथा धर्म, ज्ञान और सद्बुद्धि की प्राप्ति होती है। स्कंद पुराण के आधार पर बृहस्पतीश्वर तीर्थ की कथा (सरल और विस्तार से) बहुत प्राचीन समय की बात है। देवताओं के गुरु बृहस्पति अत्यंत विद्वान थे। वे चारों वेदों के ज्ञाता और धर्म के उपदेशक थे। फिर भी उनके मन में एक इच्छा थी कि उन्हें ऐसा दिव्य ज्ञान और शक्ति मिले जिससे वे सदा समस्त संसार का कल्याण कर सकें। उन्होंने विचार किया कि संसार में भगवान शिव की सबसे प्रिय नगरी काशी है। वहाँ की गई तपस्या शीघ्र फल देती है। इसलिए वे काशी आए और गंगा तट पर एक पवित्र स्थान पर कठोर तप करने लगे। कई वर्षों तक उन्होंने उपवास, जप, ध्यान और शिव की आराधना की। उनकी तपस्या इतनी कठोर थी कि देवता और ऋषि भी आश्चर्यचकित हो गए। अंत में भगवान शिव प्रसन्न होकर प्रकट हुए और बोले— > "हे बृहस्पति! मैं तुम्हारी भक्ति से प्रसन्न हूँ। वर माँगो।" बृहस्पति ने विनम्र होकर कहा— > "प्रभु! मुझे ऐसा वरदान दीजिए कि मैं सदैव धर्म और ज्ञान का प्रचार कर सकूँ। जो भी भक्त काशी में आपकी और मेरी श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजा करे, उसके जीवन से अज्ञान दूर हो जाए और उसे सद्बुद्धि प्राप्त हो।" भगवान शिव ने प्रसन्न होकर कहा— > "आज से तुम देवताओं के गुरु कहलाओगे। नवग्रहों में तुम्हारा सर्वोच्च सम्मान होगा। इस स्थान पर तुम्हारे द्वारा स्थापित शिवलिंग बृहस्पतीश्वर नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगा। जो भी श्रद्धा से यहाँ दर्शन और पूजा करेगा, उसे ज्ञान, विद्या, यश, संतान, विवाह-सुख और गुरु-कृपा प्राप्त होगी।" तब बृहस्पति ने वहाँ शिवलिंग की स्थापना की और भगवान शिव की पूजा की। समय के साथ यह स्थान बृहस्पतीश्वर तीर्थ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो गया। बाद में इसी क्षेत्र में देवगुरु बृहस्पति की पूजा की परंपरा भी विकसित हुई, और आज दशाश्वमेध घाट के निकट गुरु बृहस्पति मंदिर इसी परंपरा से जुड़ा माना जाता है। इस कथा से मिलने वाली शिक्षा सच्ची श्रद्धा और तप से भगवान प्रसन्न होते हैं। ज्ञान और विनम्रता मनुष्य का सबसे बड़ा धन है। गुरु का सम्मान करने से जीवन में विवेक और सही मार्गदर्शन मिलता है। काशी में भगवान शिव की भक्ति को विशेष फलदायी माना गया है। The Legend of Guru Brihaspati Temple (Dev Guru Brihaspati Temple), Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi The Guru Brihaspati Temple, located near Dashashwamedh Ghat, is considered one of the ancient and rare temples of Kashi. The temple is dedicated to Brihaspati (Guru of the Gods), the preceptor of the gods. It is believed that along with visiting Kashi Vishwanath Temple, devotees who also worship Guru Brihaspati receive blessings of wisdom, education, a successful marriage, children, and the grace of a true guru. According to local tradition, Guru Brihaspati came to Kashi and performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him a boon to remain eternally present at this sacred place. Since then, this temple has been regarded as a center of divine wisdom and the blessings of the guru. Devotees especially visit on Thursdays to offer prayers. The temple stands close to the famous Dashashwamedh Ghat, which is associated with the legend that Lord Brahma performed ten Ashwamedha Yajnas to welcome Lord Shiva. Hence the ghat came to be known as "Dashashwamedh" ("the place of ten horse sacrifices"). Religious Beliefs Offering yellow clothes, split chickpeas (chana dal), turmeric, and yellow flowers on Thursdays is considered highly auspicious. Students, teachers, those facing delays in marriage, or those affected by an unfavorable Jupiter (Guru) in astrology especially come here to seek blessings. Visiting this temple along with Kashi Vishwanath is believed to be especially meritorious. The Traditional Legend of Guru Brihaspati Temple It is important to note that while the Skanda Purana, particularly its Kashi Khanda, extensively describes many sacred shrines and Shiva lingas in Kashi, the complete story of the present-day Guru Brihaspati Temple is not narrated continuously in a single chapter. The current tradition is based on references from the Kashi Khanda, local beliefs, and the oral traditions preserved by temple priests. 1. Sage Angira and Brihaspati Brihaspati was the son of the great sage Angira. From birth he was exceptionally brilliant, deeply learned in the Vedas, and devoted to righteousness. Through rigorous penance, sacrifices, and scriptural study, he earned the highest respect among the gods and became known as Devaguru (Guru of the Gods) and Vachaspati, the Lord of Wisdom. 2. Brihaspati's Penance in Kashi According to the Kashi Khanda tradition, Brihaspati came to the sacred city of Kashi and performed intense penance in honor of Lord Shiva. For many years he devoted himself to chanting sacred mantras, meditation, and performing Rudrabhisheka. Eventually, Lord Shiva appeared before him and invited him to ask for a boon. 3. Shiva's Boon Brihaspati humbly prayed: > "O Vishwanath! Grant me the blessing that I may always guide people on the path of righteousness and bestow wisdom and right understanding upon all devotees who visit Your holy city." Lord Shiva, pleased with his devotion, declared: "You shall forever be known as the Guru of the gods. Among the Navagrahas, you shall receive the highest honor. The Shiva Linga established by you in Kashi shall become famous as Brihaspatishvara. Whoever worships here with sincere devotion shall receive wisdom, success in education, a happy marriage, children, prosperity, and the grace of the Guru." Brihaspatishvara Shiva Linga Tradition holds that Brihaspati himself established the sacred Shiva Linga here, which became known as Brihaspatishvara. In later centuries, worship of Guru Brihaspati also developed in the same area, eventually giving rise to the present Guru Brihaspati Temple near Dashashwamedh Ghat. Importance of Thursday Thursday is regarded as the sacred day of Guru Brihaspati. On this day, devotees: Wear yellow clothing. Offer turmeric, split chickpeas, and yellow flowers. Worship both Lord Shiva and Guru Brihaspati. It is believed that these acts strengthen the benefic influence of Jupiter and bring wisdom, honor, family happiness, and spiritual progress. The Message of the Kashi Khanda The central teaching of the Kashi Khanda is that Kashi is the eternal city of Lord Shiva, where every sacred shrine guides seekers toward righteousness, wisdom, and ultimately liberation (moksha). The story of Brihaspati conveys the same message: true knowledge is attained through devotion, humility, discipline, and reverence for one's guru. Although the Kashi Khanda mentions Brihaspatishvara Tirtha, different manuscripts preserve different readings of the Sanskrit verses. Therefore, scholars avoid quoting specific verses without reliable textual evidence. The Story Based on the Skanda Purana (Simple Version) Long ago, Guru Brihaspati, the spiritual teacher of the gods, desired to attain divine wisdom and spiritual power that would enable him to benefit the entire world. He reflected that Kashi, the beloved city of Lord Shiva, was the most sacred place for spiritual practice. Therefore, he came to the banks of the Ganga and undertook severe penance. For many years he observed fasting, meditation, mantra recitation, and worship of Lord Shiva. His devotion became so intense that even the gods and sages were amazed. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before him and said: > "O Brihaspati, I am pleased with your devotion. Ask for a boon." Brihaspati replied: > "Lord, bless me so that I may forever spread righteousness and wisdom. May every devotee who worships both You and me in Kashi be freed from ignorance and receive true understanding." Lord Shiva answered: > "From this day onward, you shall be the Guru of the gods. You shall hold the highest honor among the Navagrahas. The Shiva Linga established by you here shall be renowned as Brihaspatishvara. Whoever worships here with faith shall receive wisdom, learning, fame, children, marital happiness, and the grace of the Guru." Thereafter, Brihaspati established the Shiva Linga and worshipped Lord Shiva. Over time, this sacred place became known as Brihaspatishvara Tirtha, and later the tradition of worshipping Guru Brihaspati developed into the present Guru Brihaspati Temple near Dashashwamedh Ghat. Moral Teachings Sincere devotion and spiritual discipline attract divine blessings. Wisdom and humility are the greatest treasures of human life. Respect for one's guru brings right judgment, guidance, and success. Worship of Lord Shiva in Kashi is believed to bestow extraordinary spiritual merit and lead devotees toward liberation.
